Addiction

1 Corinthians 10:13-14

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”

I am Priest Chris Therrien of the EOC, and today I am going to talk about a very serious topic. Addiction is a very serious thing that can consume your life. You can lose friends, family, and even worse, your relationship with God. Addiction isn’t just pharma either. It can be anything really. TV, games, books, partying, clubbing, drinking, smoking… the list goes on. If any of these things take up more time than you use serving the Lord, then you could already be addicted.

Now, what is addiction exactly? Well, it’s the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma. Of course, as I have said before it can really be to anything. Not just narcotics. Now that you know what addiction is, how can you prevent it? Or escape it if you have one? Well to prevent it, like most things are moderation and time management. If you’re spending more time at home watching TV and getting drunk, for 15 hours a day and sleeping the rest, that is a problem, as the Lord should take up the largest percentage of your day. Baby steps at first to escape this of course, but it must get progressively shorter as time goes on.

As I said about preventing it, make schedules for yourself. And if you’re doing any sort of drug, pharmaceutical habits, or excessive drinking; it’s time to stop. Take faith in the Lord that he will give you the strength needed to get off of whatever it is you’re doing if you just give Him the time and the love.

1 Peter 5:10

“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.”

Psalm 50:15

“and call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”

Philippians 4:13

“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

Matthew 26:41
“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

The Lord will save you, this is clear. Do not let addiction rule you, or even worse kill you. Far too many people die each day to either drug addictions or alcohol addictions. It’s a sad truth in this world that should not happen under any circumstance. Those of us who have lost people to such addictions know what it does to the people around them, not just before they die either.

Have faith and the Lord and give yourself to Him. If you see yourself consumed by any substance, any activity that is ruining your life and chances with God, then stop. Control yourself and beg for His love and guidance. It will come to you as all things do through the Lord and His Father. I hope this will help at least one person. Amen.
