Anger
Sermon by Priest Michael Harr
February 13th, 2017
Hello everyone, today I want to talk about anger. Lately I have been seeing in the world a lot of anger and most is unnecessary anger that only leads to sin. There are two types of anger that will be discussed today. One is the righteous anger of the Lord against those who sin and commit acts of evil. The other type is unrighteous anger of people that are quick-tempered which leads to acts of wickedness.
We will start today with the bad side of anger and then we will see what the Bible and the Lord have to say about this subject. Let us start by looking at a Bible verse on the bad side of anger. We will take the words of Christ himself.
Matthew 5:22
“But I am saying to you, that everyone who will be angry against his brother without cause is condemned before the judge, and everyone who will say to his brother, ‘I spit on you’, is condemned before the assembly, and whoever will say ‘You fool.’ is condemned to the Gehenna of fire.”
We can see here that you have to have a good reason to even be angry with someone else. These are the words spoken by Yeshua 2,000 years ago. If we go back even further we can consult the Wisdom of Solomon.
Proverbs 19:11
“A man’s discretion makes him slow to anger, And it is his glory to overlook a transgression.”
This goes along with the Law of Love taught by the Messiah 2,000 years ago. So let us look at the righteous anger of God now. We can see in the Torah that God showed his anger to the Israelites who rebelled against the Law of God and even did so while Moses was alive among them. We have seen how God’s anger is kindled when the people follow after other gods and idols that are false and made of wood, stone or metal. We can see that when people behave corruptly and wickedly that God’s anger is against them. This theme is repeated throughout the Torah and Tanakh. For example,
Deuteronomy 31:17
“Then My anger will be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them and hide My face from them, and they will be consumed, and many evils and troubles will come upon them; so that they will say in that day, ‘Is it not because our God is not among us that these evils have come upon us?”
The difference between these types of angers is that one is done out of righteousness and necessity to turn people away from Evil and back to God, while the other form of evil that most people exude is quick tempered anger often leading to the very evil that makes God angry to begin with. We even see in the Bible How God himself is slow to anger and merciful. We see in Proverbs how King Solomon encourages people to be slow to anger that we may be tempered and controlling of our own souls.
James 1:19-20
“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.”
Let us all learn from these lessons, myself included so that we strive to be upright and just in the eyes of Almighty God and the Messiah Lord RayEl. We all must appear before his judgment seat soon. We must fix within ourselves what is wrong now before that time. God Bless you all in Lord RayEl’s name, Amen.
